Pécs
Mysterious crypts from the Roman
Age, Turkish djamis with cupolas, a slim minaret,
exquisite Zsolnay-ceramics, grandiose Csontváry-paintings,
decorative Vasarely-patterns, almond-trees blooming
early in spring, restaurants and cafeterias
with pleasant atmosphere . this is Pécs,
the 2000-year-old town with mediterranean climate
and atmosphere at the southern foot of Mecsek
Hill. It has been a bishop's seat since 1009.
The road to the top of the hill
is bordered by the steep streets and nice houses
of old Pecs, Tettye. The circle panorama from
the 525-meter-high Misina-Peak is wonderful.
It is a pleasant evening program to taste the
famous wines of the hill after hiking on the
marked pathways in the Mecseki Park Forest.
Pecs called Sopianae in the Roman
was a significant centre of early Christianity:
the standalone group of monuments from the 4th
century is the .necropolis. consisting of 16
graves the unique value of which was acknowledged
by UNESCO as a World Heritage in 2000. Seven
constructions are still being excavated and
two monuments are open to the public: our most
significant ancient Christian monument is the
two-storied Ancient Christian Mausoleum (Szent
István square) with wall-paintings, Christ
initials and the remains of three sarcophagi.
The seven-cusp Chapel (Jug Crypt) that can be
accessed from Dóm square show paintings
on the wall and one of them shows a jug.
